The Pros And Cons Of Overhead Conveyors In Carrying Different Cargoes
Overhead conveyors provide a useful variation on the standard theme of conveyor belt systems. They offer a variety of benefits, and of course they have some drawbacks as well. They are used in a very wide variety of industrial situations. Overhead conveyors can combine all of the advantages of the standard conveyor systems with the unique attribute of being able to move in virtually any direction. A well designed overhead conveyor can even move directly upwards, something which is not possible even for the best design of screw conveyor.
Overhead conveyors operate by carrying items, usually bundled items, on a kind of hook from which they suspend from an overhead cable. They are most suitable for carrying items in bulk due to the fact that it takes time to load the cargo on to the cable carrier. If the purpose of an automated conveyor system is to save manpower by automating the process of transporting items from one place to another, it does defeat that purpose to a degree to have it so that it takes a long time to load the carrier in the first place.
Overhead conveyors are especially suitable in situations where items or substances need to be gathered together and then transported to one place. They are also exceptionally useful if you need to create a system of returning empty cartons or packaging in a warehousing situation, without losing valuable space to a conventional conveyor belt system. The overhead conveyor system is especially suited to use in warehouses, provided of course that it is strong enough to handle the load it has to carry. That consideration, of course, is virtually irrelevant when the cargo is going to be empty cases and cartons.
This is brings us to the main disadvantage inherent in overhead conveyors, and that is the increased safety risk. When items are suspended at height, they naturally have a greater potential to create danger situations than they would if they were being carried at surface level. In an era where there are sadly far too many cases of legal action being started by people who have suffered accidents at work, it is absolutely imperative that you take every possible precaution to make your conveyer installation as safe as possible.
An overhead conveyor, by its very nature, cannot be installed by an amateur who doesn't know what they are doing. It needs a specialist dedicated installation from a professional team, ideally from the same organization you would have worked with to create the plan for the system in the first place. This is definitely not an area where any corners can be cut, so be very careful to include the expense of professional installation in any costing that you may do. Even taking this into account, your business may be able to save a lot of time through overhead conveyors.
